Crank was my first taste of Ellen Hopkins' free verse, and although the story line was bleak and graphic and horrific, I loved the writing style. The book begins with sweet Kristina being shipped off to her father's for the summer. While there, she not only meets the monster, methamphetamine, but Bree, an alternate personality she didn't know existed. Here is Kristina, innocent and unknowing; and here is Bree, flirting with drugs and every man she meets. While Kristina/Bree might not have been the most loveable character, I couldn't help but hope throughout the novel that she might be able to escape her addictions. The amazing part was that no matter how dark and unfathomable the story got, it still kept me hooked, even when all hope was lost. The rawness and gritty attitude the narrater had made it seem that much more real, and it was one of the best drug-related book I've read for a while.
5 stars for the impact it left on me. Recommended to those with a strong stomach and fans of drug/sexual abuse stories.

I first read Crank my sophomore year in high school (like 6 years ago, jeesh) and I couldn't put it down. I was reading under the desk during class and I finished half the book the first day during school. That was also my first Hopkins' experience and Crank remains one of my favorite books to this day.
